I originally acquired Knucklehead From Kelly Asbury (animated film director of such movies as Shrek 2, Gnomeo & Juliet, Smurfs: The Lost Village with many more credits, he also is the author of children’s books and the book DUMMY DAYS: America’s Favorite Ventriloquists from Radio and early TV)
Kelly was honored with the task of interviewing Paul Winchell at a special event in March, 2004.
In a letter to me, which will be included with the sale of Knucklehead, Kelly states:
“Winchell took a few moments with this very Knucklehead figure and provided others and me with a brief private backstage performance! His voice and technique were pitch perfect.”
Paul Winchell autographed the headstick on this same evening. Kelly includes the specifics of this event and personal thoughts on this evening in his letter to me. As Kelly states, he is “a very special piece of ventriloquism history”
Also stated in Kelly’s letter:
This replica figure was made by Ray Guyll of Seattle, Washington, probably in the 1980’s or 90’s and was authorized by Paul Winchell.
As many vents out there know Ray was a wonderful creator of ventriloquist figures.
I would hope Knucklehead goes to a worthy home as Kelly wished him with me.
This Knucklehead is a molded cast figure. Hands and legs with shoes are also cast. He has fixed eyes and is clothed in the clothes Kelly had on him.
